The English Language Unit at USAL equips students with essential skills to achieve academic excellence, fostering a supportive environment for both new and continuing students. Anchored by the English Language Learning Center (ELLC), the unit supports students from intensive courses through advanced levels up to final project preparation. It offers guidance in producing accurate written work and delivering oral presentations with confidence.<\/p>

Differentiated learning is provided to meet students\u2019 diverse needs, and assessment is tailored accordingly, promoting critical thinking and research skills for lifelong learning.<\/p>

Instructors engage in ongoing in-service training and frequently participate in peer coaching. They stay updated on current topics in education, particularly in Second Language Acquisition, and utilize AI tools to inform pedagogical practices. This introductory English course is designed for very beginner students or those who are French educated. It follows a clear developmental sequence, beginning with basic word-level skills, progressing to simple sentence construction, and ultimately enabling students to produce clear and coherent paragraphs. Students will practice core language skills, including grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, through structured, interactive activities. The course emphasizes real-life communication, accuracy, and clarity. By the end of the course, students are expected to write organized paragraphs and communicate effectively in everyday contexts.

ENGL110<\/b>
This remedial English course is designed for learners who need to strengthen their foundational language skills. It follows a developmental sequence that reinforces essential grammar concepts, supports the creation of well-formed sentences, and guides students toward writing clear, coherent paragraphs. Students will practice core skills, including grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, through structured and interactive activities. The course emphasizes real-life communication, improved accuracy, and greater confidence in using English. By the end of the course, students will be able to write coherent paragraphs, understand basic written and spoken texts, and express ideas fluently in everyday contexts.

ENGL115<\/b>
This course combines Remedial English 110 and 120, providing students with a comprehensive pathway to develop both foundational and intermediate English language skills. It begins with core grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills, progressing to more complex academic and real-world applications. In Level 1, students will build essential skills, such as using basic grammar structures, writing coherent paragraphs, improving reading comprehension, and engaging in practical conversations. Listening activities will focus on understanding spoken English in everyday situations. In Level 2, students will deepen their proficiency by applying grammar in advanced writing and speech, writing multi-paragraph essays, analyzing complex texts, and participating in extended conversations. Listening exercises will introduce more challenging spoken English, including various accents and registers. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate confidently and effectively in both academic and real-world contexts.

This Remedial English Level 120 course builds on foundational skills and focuses on advancing students’ proficiency in grammar, writing, reading comprehension, speaking, and listening. The course emphasizes the application of English in more complex academic and real-world contexts, bridging the gap between basic language use and more fluent, confident communication. Students will engage in writing exercises that incorporate a variety of sentence structures and advanced vocabulary. They will learn to write multi-paragraph essays, analyze texts in greater depth, and engage in extended conversations. The speaking and listening components will focus on fluency, accuracy, and the comprehension of longer spoken English, including diverse accents and registers. By the end of the course, students will be able to write clear, well-organized essays, comprehend and analyze complex texts, engage in meaningful conversations, and respond effectively to spoken English in a variety of contexts.

This Remedial English Level 130 course is designed to bridge the gap between Remedial 120 and English Communication Skills I. The course focuses on critical reading across disciplines and helps students acquire research-related skills in writing, listening, and language. Students will engage in activities that develop their ability to construct coherent essays, improve sentence structure and grammar, and apply the writing process effectively, including incorporating in-text citations from references and paraphrasing sources appropriately. The course also emphasizes reading comprehension, focusing on identifying main ideas, drawing conclusions, recognizing text structures, and using context clues to understand vocabulary. Speaking and listening components will encourage students to communicate effectively, express ideas clearly, and respond to spoken texts in a way that enhances both individual and group interactions. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with enhanced writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills for academic success and real-world communication.

ENGL201<\/b>
This course is designed to strengthen students\u2019 academic literacy and prepare them for college-level communication by integrating critical reading, structured writing, and effective oral response. Building on foundational skills, the course focuses on analyzing a range of contemporary texts across disciplines, helping students evaluate authors\u2019 arguments through rhetorical appeals such as ethos, pathos, and logos. Students will develop research-related writing skills by practicing inquiry-based, exploratory essays that examine multiple perspectives rather than advancing a single fixed position.Emphasis is placed on the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, and editing, as well as developing coherence, academic tone, sentence structure, and grammatical accuracy. Students will learn to evaluate scholarly and non-scholarly sources, identify claims, assess evidence, and respond critically through paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, and applying APA citation conventions.The course also enhances reading comprehension skills, with attention to identifying main ideas, recognizing text structures, drawing conclusions, and using context clues to expand academic vocabulary. The course also allows students to learn non-verbal communication along with ways to tweak their language as tools for interactive speaking. Learning will be highly interactive and task-based. Students participate in simulations, debates, role-plays, and collaborative speaking challenges.
