Breaking the Mold: A Field-Driven Exam Experience at USAL

Within a practice-based educational vision that integrates theory with real-world application, the University of Sciences and Arts in Lebanon-USAL organized an exceptional final exam for the course Media Program Production (Pre-Production), under the supervision of Dr. Layla Chamseddine. The exam was transformed from a traditional assessment into a professional experience that simulates the realities of the media industry.

Students were required to design and produce a practical media program. By unanimous decision, they implemented a television magazine show consisting of a single 90-minute episode built around three main themes: art, economics, and health. Accordingly, the students were divided into three groups based on these themes, with carefully assigned roles within each team to ensure active participation according to individual skills and abilities.

For the art segment, students welcomed the rising actor Ali Ibrahim as a guest, while the economics segment hosted Dr. Nabil Srour, a university professor and specialist in economics. The health segment featured university student Rama Kareem, reflecting the students’ ability to select appropriate guests and justify their relevance to the program’s objectives.

Throughout the preparation phase, a dynamic and positive spirit of teamwork and competition prevailed. Students completed all stages of professional production, from concept development, building the segments, writing questions, selecting elements, and creating the running order, to executing the episode based on the agreed pre-production script.

During the exam, an evaluative component was conducted under Dr. Chamseddine’s guidance, where constructive feedback was provided and performance gaps were discussed in a developmental and learning-oriented context that strengthened the students’ critical thinking skills.

This innovative assessment model embodies USAL’s vision for advancing media education by redefining the exam as an applied learning experience that develops professional competence and prepares students for successful entry into the job market.
